Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at 900 miles an hour,

That's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned,

A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour,

Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way . . .

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whiz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,

Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,

How amazingly unlikely is your birth,

And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,

'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth

Take stock of those around you and you will....
hear them talk in precise terms about themselves
and their surroundings which would seem to point to them having ideas on the matter. But start to analyse those ideas and you will find that they hardly reflect in any way the reality to which they appear to refer, and if you go deeper you will discover that there is not even at attempt to adjust the ideas to this reality. Quite the contrary: through these notions the individual is trying to cut off any personal vision of reality, of his own very life. For life is at the start a chaos in which one is lost. The individual suspects this, but he is frightened at finding himself face to face with this terrible reality, and tries to cover it over with a curtain of fantasy, where everything is clear. It does not worry him that his "ideas" are not true, he uses them as trenches for the defense of his existence, as scarecrows to frighten away reality. ---Jose Ortega Y Gasset (for reflection purposes only, and not to be taken personally) quoted in The Denial of Death, Ernest Becker
