VoIP: A Cable Rundown

Comcast: Testing VoIP in Coatesville, Pa. Planning full-market rollouts in 2004 in Hartford, Conn.; Indianapolis; Springfield, Mass., and Philadelphia.

Time Warner Cable: Launched VoIP in Portland, Maine, and Raleigh, N.C., currently reporting 8,000 subscribers. Authorized to provide phone service in New York state, with applications pending in Ohio, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. Service is priced at $39.95 a month for data/video subscribers.

Cox: Launching VoIP test in Roanoke, Va. Planning to roll out VoIP as standalone service in markets currently unserved by Cox's circuit-switched phone offering, and as an extension to circuit-switched service in other markets.

Charter: Testing VoIP in several markets, but no plans for further launches until late 2004 or 2005. Reports passing 100,000 homes in St. Louis with about 24,000 VoIP customers. Plans in place to expand footprint to three unidentified [voip] markets next year.

Cablevision: Rolled out VoIP across entire New York-area system, currently counting 5,000 subscribers for the $34.95 a month service.

Adelphia: Plans VoIP test in 2004.

BrightHouse Networks: Plans VoIP rollout in 2004.

Insight: Plans VoIP test in 2004.

Mediacom: Plans VoIP test in 2004.

Armstrong Utilities and Mid-Hudson Cablevision have agreements to offer VoIP service in partnership with Vonage.

--Greenberg said "[he] doesn’t believe the next few sign ups from an MSO will come other than from the ones on the list. They are the MSOs in the pipeline we are having substantial negotiations with.”

He added later [in the last earnings conference call] that didn’t mean there couldn’t be a deal with a Tier 1 MSO in the U.S. But these are the tier 2 MSOs looking at this seriously now, with NTOP.
