No it isn't a pass to be president (we saw that with McCain). But politically, it doesn't hurt to run a couple of war heroes against a guy who got a deferment and a guy who served in the guard. I think that if the economy stays right about where it is today, the biggest factor in the election are that people are scared. So, to beat Bush, imo the dems will have to make a reasonable argument that they can protect you better than the existing team can. I think Kerrey/Clark might be able to do that, I don't see Dean doing it. I don't see Edwards doing it.
