In the last election there was a lot of noise about Bush deserting his national guard position, and how he got the position to begin with, and none of it stuck. All the public will see are two candidates who were wounded in Vietnam and got medals for it. Also, given that Clark rose to be commander of nato, I don't think charges that he was a lousy officer will stick. Regarding Kerry's anti-war stuff, that could be a plus, as vietnam remains an unpopular war. So, he gets the best of both worlds: he is a hero for fighting in the war, and a hero for protesting a war that many (especially deep-pocketed west coast contributors) now see as wrong. Generally the "noise" level has gotten so high in presidential elections, that those sorts of things don't matter much.
