You are comparing peak rates which is an easy metric to calculate and of some importance to the user. But it is not anywhere near as important as much fuzzier metrics like:

1) Average throughput (no one will actually get 2.4 Mbps, even on an unloaded system, unless they are right near the Basestation).

2) Cost per avg Mbps.

3) ...

I happen to believe that EV-DO will do much better on these fuzzier metrics, but that is much more debatable than peak data rates.
