Edwards made his fortune as a trial lawyer. His biggest supporter is ATLA, the national trial lawyers' association, to which he will be deeply in political hock. He will be bloodied on this issue. Voters don't like trial lawyers or the perception that they have been made wealthy as a result of spurious lawsuits, though I think Edwards' cases were for the most part meritorious, though there has been some criticism of the manner in which he handled medical malpractice cases. This could end up being a serious political liability. I certainly don't buy the image of Edwards as a completely clean trial lawyer who only represented the downtrodden against evil doctors, negligent hospitals and greedy corporations. Who wants another slick Southern lawyer as President?
