"Bush is now in a statistical dead heat with the opposition nine months before the election, ahead 45 percent to 44 percent -- down from an 18-point advantage nine months ago."

Ann,
Bush is down only 3% in NJ where gore won big last election. There are no inroads in red states for the dems and Florida is pretty solid for the republicans this time around. I dont believe your numbers because they pit an unknown generic democrat against bush. Wait until after the SOU this evening and you will see other numbers that also will be an exaggeration the other way. The only chance the dems have is to nominate someone with enough gravitas to stand on the stage with the president in the Fall. Kerry has the best chance for that but usually blows it in his conflicted presentation. Edwards might be a bit to slick. Dean just flat out cannot win. Clark's credentials make him the strongest on paper but he is a bit flaky and the the critisism he gets from other generals should do him in later on. Bush is a strong favorite to win a small to medium victory. mike
