The author is either pulling everyone's leg, or is one of the worst writers of fiction in the history of the world. War bride eating alone at the steakhouse she used to enjoy with her husband (yeah, you an what army is going to get a woman to dine alone at a restaurant), just happens to be sitting within earshot of both: (1) two women against the Iraq war; and (2) a group of soldiers. Okay so you're with me so far, all these people just happened to be where, speaking in conversational tones, they could hear every word that anyone said. But it gets better because not only are the two ladies against the war, they think soldiers are "baby killers," a term not heard since 1973. The author could have at least made the offending parties aging hippies.
