I was surprised that the Brits have the lowest death rate since they IMO drive like maniacs
Four things to point out

1) British roads are crap, and I think that that seeing people drive 75 on a crappy roads gives the perception of maniacs.

2) Not sure what those figures refer to but Brits don't spend much time on freeways/expressways or motorways so that might have something to do with it.

3) Having grown up in the UK and driven on those motorways, I have to say they are more orderly than the US freeways/expressways. It might be faster, but you just don't see cars bobbing in and out of lanes cutting people off as often. The "I've got to change lanes every 100 feet attitude" is one of my peevs regarding US traffic.

4) Also the Brits don't allow amateurs on the road - there was an interesting article in the WSJ last year regarding American residents in the UK having problems in passing the UK driving licensing exam.
