DWDM SFP Transceiver First to Deliver Twice the Density, Half the Power Consumption at CWDM Pricing CHATSWORTH, Calif., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- LuminentOIC, a leading supplier of metro transceivers and Fiber-to-the-Premise solutions, has announced availability of the industry's first Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) Small Form Pluggable (SFP) transceiver. The new Manhattan series of DWDM SFPs delivers twice the density and half the power consumption at CWDM pricing.
As the industry's first DWDM SFP, the new LuminentOIC transceiver is the smallest DWDM pluggable transceiver form factor available, approximately six times smaller than the existing DWDM hot plug Multi Source Agreement (MSA). Almost any equipment that has SFP interfaces can immediately support 100 GHz spacing DWDM interfaces, including SFP based Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) systems.
Traditionally, CWDM solutions are used over DWDM alternatives based on cost, simplicity, power consumption, and equipment density. Alternatively, DWDM solutions provide maximum scalability in both channel count and distance. C-band DWDM systems currently employ 44 channels that can be amplified by low cost Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA), enabling the reach required to service extended Metro Area Networks. With the introduction of the Manhattan series, the best features of both technologies can be combined.
LuminentOIC's new DWDM SFP has unprecedented low power consumption of 1.3 Watts over the full operating temperature range (-5 to 70C case). The next lowest power consumption pluggable DWDM transceiver (available in the larger Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) form factor) is rated at 2 Watts, and the typical Hot Plug DWDM MSA transceiver is 4 Watts. The combination of extremely small size and low power consumption enables a new generation of DWDM systems with twice the density of current systems.
Mentioned Last Change MRVC 4.96 (Unchanged) The first product release incorporates the highest level of pluggable transceiver technology. With integrated APD technology, receiver sensitivities better than -28dBm at OC-48 are guaranteed. Digital performance monitoring is available for transmit power, receive power, bias current, APD voltage, TEC current, and temperature locking. Available in 44 channels on the 100 GHz ITU grid, the wavelength stability over temperature is +/-0.04 nm. The initial release also supports multi-rate functionality from 100Mbps to 2.7Gbps.
LuminentOIC's DWDM SFP product is available for sampling now with volume production starting in the second quarter 2004. Modules will be priced to reflect current CWDM transceiver pricing.
LuminentOIC will be demonstrating a live demo of the new DWDM SFP at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) in Los Angeles, CA at booth #4101 from February 24-26, 2004. For more information on OFC, visit ofcconference.org /.
