Atmel Introduces First Element of New Standard Product Family for Multimedia Section Supply in Feature Phones

Tuesday January 20, 8:01 am ET

ROUSSET, France, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML - News) announced today the release of its AT73C204 Power Management standard product, the first IC specifically designed for multimedia section supply in new-generation feature phones. Manufactured on Atmel's low-cost mainstream CMOS process, the AT73C204 is designed to supply CMOS or CCD camera modules, MP3 or polyphonic ICs, multimedia coprocessor, external memory module, wireless data connection such as Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth®, and a USB interface.
The AT73C204 features the complete set of power supplies required to supply a high-end multimedia application. Seven linear regulators provide output voltages from 1.8V to 2.8V with a range of output currents between 10mA to 130mA. A switching converter with integrated FET providing 300mA at 1.8V or 2.5V is specially designed to supply the coprocessor core that is used as a multimedia engine in most feature phones.

"Feature phone manufacturers may choose their basic phone solution from a chipset or a module. Then, each time they add a multimedia feature, usually in a separate PCB, they have to add a discrete power supply. They have two questions when looking at a discrete power supply solution for multimedia: how to find the lowest-cost solution and how to save space on the board. Atmel is now able to answer both questions by proposing different solutions for different levels of integration of multimedia features", explained Michele Casetta, Marketing Manager for Atmel's Power Management Product Line." The AT73C204 is designed to supply the highest level of integration of multimedia features, which is typically the case in smartphones. The AT73C204 also illustrates Atmel's synergy in multimedia phones. Customers can today turn to Atmel as a provider of a multimedia coprocessor, CMOS camera module, MP3 sound generator, GPS module, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module as well as the AT73C204 that supplies all of them."

Atmel offers the AT73C204 in a 5 x 5 mm, 49-ball ultra-thin BGA in order to satisfy portable device manufacturers' minimum space requirements. It is also available in a 7 x 7 mm, 49-pin QFN package for a reduced number of PCB layers. The AT73C204 is available now mounted on a reference design board or as engineering samples. Suggested resale price is US$3.90 per unit in the quantity of 1,000.
