Job: I think you are right. The issue with him was that he was being tested regarding Earthly rewards. He had everything and was faithful. What happens to his faith as each Earthly reward turns sour and punitive, does he still believe. Good health vs disease, children vs loss, wealth turned to poverty etc. In his case, his faith was uneffected.

The question all of us need to ask in the presence of sufferering is whether or not this world is the be-all and end-all of our circumstance. For an athiest the God question is confusing because they have the preset notion that the end of life on earth is the end so any God would have to make the experience just and worth while for those who have demonstrated sound principle and practice. This is irrational. One has to consider one with the other. The notion of an eternal existence and a God of eternity brings a different notion of what has to happen to invalidate God during Earthly existence.

For someone who believes in a Karmic afterwards, the trials, tribulations and circumstances in this life play a role in a wholeness of justice going forward. If one denies God in favor of Earthly comforts then one demonstrates a lack of faith in eternity.
