re: John, in theory that's how it should work. In practice, the rich...our leaders......get their kids out of the service.....one way or another. That's what happened during Vietnam. In fact, Bush went AWOL from the Air National Guard and not the regular Air Force.

In practice, it's not perfect. But there are folks that won't avoid the draft if that is the law, so you do get regular folks that wouldn't normally volunteer for the armed services.

It makes war much more real, much more main street. It makes many of us share the war, and IMHO we need to share the war if we want to justify the sacrifice.
