There seem to be two variations of looking at existence here on earth from a belief standpoint, one is the escape from pain route where one eliminates all pain by extinguishing desire and consciousness during life. Catholics in the past would do this by fasting, prayer and penance and sometimes harsher means and Buddhists by contemplation and yoga.

The other would be to offer up without trying to escape into some other reality all their suffering as a penance to God out of a belief that human existence is somehow stained from inception by original sin. Either way they're looking at the eternal and by doing so plugging in to a different, or at least less common, and for them better reality.

"The question all of us need to ask in the presence of sufferering is whether or not this world is the be-all and end-all of our circumstance. For an athiest the God question is confusing because they have the preset notion that the end of life on earth is the end so any God would have to make the experience just and worth while for those who have demonstrated sound principle and practice. This is irrational. One has to consider one with the other. The notion of an eternal existence and a God of eternity brings a different notion of what has to happen to invalidate God during Earthly existence."

Even if this reality was all there is it would not invalidate God but it would at all times invalidate people who try and make others conform to their "consensus".
