Stronger Asian growth seen

BY SIDEK KAMISO
ECONOMIC growth across Asia is expected to gain ground more decisively this year, with growth rates likely to be above market expectations, an international research house said in its New Year assessment on Asian economies released recently.

Goldman Sachs Asia Economic Group said the economic expansion cycle of Asian economies was still at its early stage and would gain momentum this year. The pace was also expected to remain intact through 2005.

“The above-trend growth we forecast in 2004 follows three lean years of sub-par growth. In fact, given the deep 'macro-reset' in the region following the 1997-1998 financial crisis, Asia economies have considerable room to run hard and fast before any concerns on broad-based overheating become a genuine issue,” the report said.

The research house said the trend applied to Asia's domestic demand, particularly China.
