In principle I don't object to people wearing religious symbols but there's a problem with the mindset of some immigrants who refuse to mingle with locals and frequently only master their language very poorly. This particularly applies to some Muslim immigrants in several European countries. It's not a matter of racism, it's a matter of recognizing social and economic trouble spots. Have a look at the following BBC article which should better be titled "Growing ghettos of [Muslim] foreigners" (a phrase from the article) but has a more PC headline:

School girls who wear a headscarf often are not only not allowed to take part in swimming lessons but also other sport activities (basketball, volleyball etc.). They are denied to follow biology lessons when sex education is on the curriculum. They are not allowed to join the class for school trips.

I do not see a dispute about learning French

I'd be glad if some of the concerned children in Germany spoke German reasonably. French is only a dream for them.

we have laws that protect against job discrimination on the basis of religion

What if the applicant hasn't learned the language of his prospective employer and lacks basic math skills?

In America, we would endure such tension in favor of freedom in the exercise of religion....

You normally are very concerned about Islamicists who believe their actions to be an expression of their religiousness.
