JF, You are paying a guy with your taxes (or in this administrations case with your deficits) to take your place on the battlefield.

Big deal, I am paying a guy to protect me from criminals and enforce the law. This way, I don't have to exercise my 2nd amendment right to buy a gun and defend my own premises (Tim May style). I also pay a guy to go fight fires so that I don't have to form a bucket brigade when the next California wildfires come.

Not only that, but I also honor their sacrifices and their commitment to duty, just like I honor the soldiers who fight America's wars for me. Despite my lack of service experience, I'm not taking their sacrifices for granted.

the decision to go to war should always be the very last, desperate option.

You may not agree with the pre-emptive part of Bush's foreign policy, but it's all about preventing that last, desperate situation where all out war is the only option. It's about not waiting until the enemy attacks us again and causes thousands of deaths on American soil. It's about taking the battle to their turf under our control.

Now before you jump on me again, know that I too have problems with pre-emptive doctrines. But the last thing I would argue for is a draft just to make war a tougher option to choose. It makes our military weaker, it forces unwilling people into a job they never wanted in the first place, and it makes our enemies that much more bolder. And the only people who are satisfied are those with anti-war agendas ... at least until real war truly becomes the only option.
