Ted Re...Its about as likely that the Wahabi leaders will overthrow the Saudi princes as it is leaders from the Church of England will overthrow Tony Blair.
Huh. Do you know what you are talking about. The Wahhabi clerics actively exhort their followers to take action against collaborators with the west; even fellow Sunni who they feel aren't devout enough.
First, there are extremists in every religion......J. Falwell and the religious right say all manner of foul things from which most religious people quickly disavow themselves.
Secondly, your original post stated that the Wahabi clerics might overthrow the Saudi monarchy which is not a very likely prospect for the reasons I previously posted. Now, you are saying something different.
Some Wahabi clerics do encourage attacks against the infidels. That does not mean they consider the Saudi monarchy infidels.....at least not in public. After all, they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.
Do you know of any church of England leaders who have done that. Why do you think Al Qaeda attacked targets in SA, to play tiddly winks.
foreignaffairs.org;
OBL and al Qaeda leaders are more than extremist Wahabis......they are religious and political ideologues. They consider all of SA to be Mecca......and not just the city of Mecca and its surrounding towns. The fact that the Saudi monarchy allows the US to put bases on Saudi soil, meaning that the infidels walk on Saudi soil on a regular basis, sends them into conniptions much like gays make Falwell crazy. Its al Qaeda that wants to overthrow the Saudi monarchy and not the Wahabi leaders.
The ME political paradigm is very much intertwined with the religious one; in fact, there are many factions demanding that their gov'ts reflect a combination of the two much like Iran and SA. For 3 decades now, the secular and religious factions have been fighting with each other.
And behind that powerful tussle are the different ethnic hostilities. The Shiites don't like the Sunni Muslims; the Farsis don't like the Arabs; the Kurds want to be free from all of them. And then, throw in the Jews, Christians, Copts, Druze and strange branches of Islam like Alawites that are all part of the mix that is the Middle East, and you have a horrific and complicated mess.
So be careful what you say......I'll nail you every time! |
