Bill & All, NT memory gets a boost

www8.zdnet.com

[The sharp reductions in memory prices over the last year or so have allowed for much more attractive price/performance trade-offs in server configuration. It appears that interim solutions (i.e., prior to complete hardware/software) to accommodate large memory capacity are being driven by these economics. It is unclear, however, if NT support for larger memories (beyond 4GB) will be offered before Intel's Merced's availability. Wintel probably has a plan for access to such larger memories as an extension to the 32 bit version of NT, should such be necessary or advisable. IMHO]

[Larger affordable memory capacities will facilitate the NT assault on the enterprise market, inasmuch as increased memory makes a server more self-tuning, reducing the need for software tricks. However, software algorithms do have to change to fully exploit it.]

[It is also interesting that Oracle is expending effort/resources in the DEC Alpha NT arena.]

Best regards,
Arno
