Ann: We have never had a televised debate in America. What we have is a televised press conference where people running for the highest office in the land are asked to answer serious (sometimes) questions in 30 seconds or less. The result of all of this is that they practice one liners and catchy phrases. Such as "there you go again" and "I knew John Kennedy and you are no John Kennedy". Nonetheless intelligent people believe that these debates are important and meaningful. They are a joke and I don't waste my time listening, unless I have reason to think they might be entertaining. Maybe if Jesse Ventura were debating Jerry Brown or some such. Actually Al Sharpton was high on the entertainment meter. But, I never expect to get a meaningful, true response. As a means to judge a candidate's ability and grasp of the issues they are worse than useless. They are deceiving people into thinking that important issues can be discussed in sound bytes and leading us to the point where will soon have no candidates with any gravitas at all. Sorry, don't mean to rant, but I guess I had a bad day. Little joe
