re: XP Home/Pro can only be installed on one computer.

(Question) To: thecow & everyone else:
-
To repeat what I say a few months ago, in a few months
I'll buy a preloaded Windows XP $499 pc from Wal-Mart,
most likely an e-machine that includes monitor.
-
Wal-Mart has also been selling similiar equiped HP's cheap,
but more and more it looks like HP's quality has fallen.
-
For sure I will get only one hard drive, and for sure Microsoft
will make sure that any dump to a CD of the Windows XP
will not run on another pc's harddrive.
-
Thats ok, but where does Microsoft look on the harddrive
to match up license serial numbers? I ask this because
I plan on running FDISK.EXE on the harddrive and chop it up
into parts so that I can load Linus on the harddrive and boot it.
-
This way I will reload the XP I dumped to a CD and have that
be on the defaulted boot'able part of the disk the BIOS was
initially set for. If that works then I investigate loading Linus.
-
My question is to wonder if FDISK might erase that license number,
and if so then I can't chop up the hard drive into logical hard drives
where each is boot'able.
-
I'am clueless if e-Machines includes an official Windows XP CD,
or its understood that you make your own backup copy yourself.
-
A seperate topic is a boot'able CD which has been discussed
in great details on this thread and most likely those posts have
been copied over to that CL thread of most important posts.
