Maybe you should qualify that statement by saying that his is your OPINION. The reality might be different.

Thatcher, Schwarzkopf (sp) and others have long said Saddam should not have been left in power.

And that means... what? Thatcher did not order a unilateral invasion of Iraq to oust Saddam and marched UK army to Baghdad. Why do you think that is?

It is all about cost and benefit. The pleasure of seeing Saddam ousted had costs for the US that Bush Sr clearly states were very high and potentially leading to a place US would not want to be caught dead in. As Bush Jr. might yet find out.
