I don't know that either of your statements is accurate. I suspect some do enlist right out of high school, but of the kids I know who have enlisted, MOST have done so after a year or two of trying work, school, or nothing at all.

I can't really say what other kids think. But I can tell you that my son has mentioned numerous times that he sometimes feels that rather than being in school, he ought to be doing military service. His logic is that some people have to fight for what we have, so why shouldn't it be him. I would say that reflects some spirit of patriotism, and I have no reason to think it is isolated.
