The question of what uniformed police are allowed to wear beyond the official uniform is quite different from the question raised in France.

Right here, right now, in the 21st century, in les Etats- Unis, within the mainstream, it is unthinkable to curtail religious liberty to such a degree as the government of France is proposing.

I raised this to contrast the hierarchy of values within the two countries. Both have some concern for solidarity, both have some concern for religious freedom, but the relative weight attached is markedly different. I think it is interesting, and revealing. I purposely did not treat it harshly, as I was offering it as a matter of interest, not bashing, but I personally feel pretty much like Cobalt on the matter.......
