My own personal opinion is that one of the absolute best indicators is sentiment, and not necassarily as gauged by the VIX. I remember when the Nas hit 5000 and CNBC had a 3 hour special devoted entirely to the passing of that arbitrary number, that things would probably get very ugly.

I do not see the sentiment swings like some of the Bears are talking about this time around; in fact, nearly everyone I know still is hesitant about the market in general. Once this changes, I will really start to worry.
