OK Don, let me lay it for you the way I see it politically.
The question was asked for who he could say No and come across as supporting Bush. If he said Yes then it may not go well with the independents. So he left it in the middle.

So there are those pro Bush folks making a big deal about it not so much to destroy Clark but get a point for Bush. If they had an intention of destroying Clark, then they would have made an issue with his comments on Larry King live on the night of the Iowa Caucus. Sen. Dole was Larry's guest that night. And Clark was very fiesty during his response to Se. Dole so much so that Sen. Dole was rolling his eyes in embarassment and thinking to himself "Geez this General is digging his own hole with the remarks he was making"

Wes Clark in his remarks made sure that we all knew that Kerry was a Lt. in the army whereas he was General. And becuase of that he had more experience with solving complex issues. Don, in the civilian arena, that sort of a comment is a no no. That is what doomed Wes Clark. It was not beciase he failed to come out in support of Bush last night.
