MAD only worked because of the similarity in culture of the US and the USSR. Like it or not, we have far more in common with them than any non-secular, Islamic Republic. Look at our allies there: Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Oh boy! Can anyone remember the grinning princes of Saud when we were squirming in 1973 and 1979 oil embargos? I guess not. Seems like in 30 years someone's priority might have been to switch us off of oil imports. But what would you expect from a bunch of Texas oil tycoons?

That we supplied Hussein with chemical precursors and other materials for WMDs (or allowed 3rd parties to do it) as a matter of misplaced diplomatic expediency is also unquestionable. Where do the counter-insurgents get their surface to air shoulder-fired weapons to shoot down our aircraft? CIA left overs from Afghanistan and Chechnya.

The fact that Israel has orbital capability (aided by our technology transfers) AND nukes makes them a more serious threat to mainland US than a dozen Saddams. Anyone in the American cabinet who doesn't believe that right-wing elements in the Zionist state don't have a contingency plan to land one on us if we abandoned them to their neighbors is severely decoupled from reality, IMO.
