>>> But this year's State of the Union address, while not quite a lie, was clearly deceptive. I didn't feel Bush had an obligation to tick off everything that had gone wrong about Iraq, but I didn't expect him to pretend that somehow the WMD allegations had been substantiated. He cited the report of chief weapons inspector David Kay as if it vindicated the original charges, when in fact it did not. And then, in a rhetorical sleight of hand, he talked as if the aim of the war had been simply to remove a thug from office -- when that was always supposed to be a byproduct.<<<

Yes, indeed, Bush, Cheney, et. al., have perverted the truth about Iraq. No question about it. Of course, the Washington Post writer was referring only to Bush's state of the union address.
In my view, the Administration lies about Iraq will finally become understood by a wider range of American people when veterans of America's past wars, in concert with soldiers returning home from Iraq, begin describing what happened.
Of course, this description won't stand unless it's also predicated with the question "Why?" Once "why" becomes better understood, then the majority of Americans will fully realize that the deaths and torn limbs of our soldiers have been completely unnecessary and that this happened only because the Administration "perverted" the truth.
If the present Republican congress had any dignity it would immediately launch an impeachment investigation into the lies, deceptions, yes, perversions of truth, that led America to invade a sovereign nation in violation of international law.
Vietnam consciousness began changing when veterans of that war began showing up at the local diner and truth began spreading over ham and eggs. The same will hold true today! |
