I even doubt this gets much traction even with the base of the Democratic Party."

This is true. The idea that the US should follow "Europe's" (or any other country's) lead is ludicrous to most American people. If we happen to agree with "Europe" (meaning in this context, I suppose, the French and German governments), fine, we'll work together. If not, we'll "agree to disagree" and do what we think is best. Our Presidents answer to us, not other countries' rulers. Bush gets this. I don't know if any of the Democratic candidates do.
