There's no question that most Israelis would give up nuclear weapons, land, etc., for a real peace. It's so easy to be judgmental. Imagine yourself in a tiny county about the size of Massachusetts, surrounded by vast Arab lands about the size of North America, each ruled by a despot (or at best a benevolent monarch), clinging to power with a mantra that they would "drive the Jews into the sea."
Couple that with a history of terror and the world taking the political side of the Arabs, largely because of oil, and you can understand why Israel felt the need for nuclear weapons. I'm not in favor of nuclear weapons for any nation but I certainly can understand why they felt they needed them.
One can argue that lots of hypothetical scenarios about whether Israel's nukes have prevented war, prevented peace, etc. The bottom line is that we don't know. There have been secret talks between Israel and each Arab government and with each Palestinian leader, even though the Arabs can't admit this even after it's widely reported.
Rational thought and logic is pretty much thrown out the window when you are dealing with a hatred that is used to keep power in tyrants and OILogarchs.
Look at the supposedly rationale posters who post over and over about how it's ok to be suicide bombers and it's ok to target civilians because of the fact that Israel has enslaved the Palestinians. Even if that lie were not a lie, I can't understand how any human can defend suicide bombers and those who purposely attack civilians. |
