It's in Bush's interests to keep us fearful, but what's the Democrats' excuse?
It is the same phenomena which led them to give Bush carte blanche authority in 2002 to go to war, refusing to back Byrd's amendment which would have made it necessary for Bush to go back to Congress before actually committing troops. The politico Democrats believe that Bush's fear campaign has worked, and that anyone denying it will be automatically branded a blind fool or a partisan mindless mindless peacenik. Somewhat like Scott Ritter was branded as being in Saddam's pay when he said that Iraq had no WMDs. I still remember Paula Zahn sitting across from him in an interview responding to his "He doesn't have any WMD" comments by saying something like, "Oh, come on, you know that's wrong," and just dismissing him. Something similar happened with the smallpox "scare," if you recall that, though that was on a smaller scale, and was eventually dropped because so many public health workers and doctors refused to get the vaccination and said it was absurd.

The whole idea of the Bush admin is to get people fixed on security so that they don't see anything else that is going on. An old magician's trick. It works a good deal of the time. And is very difficult to combat. Especially when the press is disposed is disposed toward "drama" anyway, and terror begets drama.
