Mitsubishi Motors sales in China hit record in 2003

TOKYO: Japanese automaker Mitsubishi's 2003 sales in China have doubled from the previous year to a record high due to growing demand for its sports utility vehicles (SUVs).

The country's fourth-largest carmaker said vehicle sales rose 106 percent from 2002 to 145,235 last year.

"The overall demand for SUVs (sports utility vehicles) and other models is growing fast in China. We benefitted from this trend," said a spokesman for Mitsubishi, which is controlled by DaimlerChrysler with a 37 percent stake.

Sales of the subcompact Sigma rose 185 percent on year to 20,339 units while the Liebao, an SUV known as Pajero in Japan, was up 89 percent at 29,536 units, the company said.

The introduction of new models and aggressive marketing also boosted Mitsubishi's sales in China, the firm said.

Its alliance with DaimlerChrysler over sales and distribution networks also helped, the Japanese firm said.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. started selling vehicles in China in 1973.
