Sig, the USA is democratic while the form of government is a republic. dictionary.reference.com

Britain is democratic but not a republic, being a monarchy. New Zealand is similarly a monarchy although more democratic than the USA, with little political parties having a significant say in government and parliament due to proportional representation.

Cultural norms are what matter more than whether a country is democratic, republican, monarchical or a single party state. India has been democratic for half a century but remains in poverty because the cultural norms mean people don't support Libertarian philosophical ideas but prefers old-style socialist British ideas [ironically]. China is a single party dictatorship which has ditched the old boot-strapping Maoist mania and has opened the economy.

Saddam Hussein was probably right that without him, Iraq will be run by half a dozen presidents as it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Balkans with conflicting ideologies.
