Laz, I don't know what's bitten you. I made two very, very narrow points. The first was that the general's language was unseemly. The second was that country-wide fear has been fostered to no good end. You've thrown the kitchen sink at each of them. The first subject drifted off to the French and the second is stuck on the Japanese--as thought either is relevant to the questions at issue. We could go on and on with a running stream-of-consciousness argument but if the discussion is not on point, then what's the point of having one?

Attacks generate fear, madam. In this particular case, that was, in fact, the specific intent.

Finally, something on point. Yes, the intent of terrorism is to generate fear. Apparently they were successful. I think it's a terrible shame that we've let them get away with that. You have a much better chance of dying in an earthquake given where you live than you have of dying at the hands of terrorists yet I don't see you advocating a war on earthquakes. There are a lot of risks out there. Are you afraid of salmon and beef? What about riding in a car or airplane? We can recognize risks without being fearful. We take them in stride.

You sure have forgotten 9/11/2001 quickly.

The shock of the attacks made it's mark on all of us and triggered all sorts of emotions including fear. But we've had a chance to get some perspective since. We shouldn't still be driven by fear. IMO. Anger, maybe, but not fear.
