Certainly correct. But that is a far cry from the typical reaction.

I think that you and I agree on the principle. What we don't agree on is what is "typical."

I originally said "There is a difference, a difference bigger than a nuance, between being subservient to other countries or even catering to other countries, on one hand, and recognizing that it's smart to get along with your neighbors to the extent feasible, on the other." There is also a difference between getting along with one's neighbors to the extent that one can and sending a message that it's our way or no way, which is the message that we've been sending of late. Neither subservience nor unilateralism, the two poles, is optimal. Reasonable people can disagree about the point at which it becomes infeasible to get along but it is always better to try to get along.

What we have here--what I was objecting to--is the polarizing notion of folks in the unilateralist camp that any moderate and reasonable efforts to get along are automatically subservience. We're losing the middle ground at a furious rate. I disagree with you that it is "typical" to want subservience. What is typical is to eschew unilateralism. Lumping those who merely eschew unilateralism in with the subservient school is illogical and polarizing. It is a tactic of true believers to tar all those who are not completely with the program as being opposition extremists. Doing so produces some super campaign slogans, but it doesn't make for good governance.
