The entire history of US-Europe relations since WWII has been Europe benefitting from America acting in defense of its interests.

Whoa, Derek. US interests served Europe during that period because it was in our interests to keep the Soviet Union out of Europe, to have Europe as a buffer. That was a perfect confluence of interests. The cold war is over. It is unlikely that such a perfect confluence of interests will ever again occur. Sure, more often than not their interest and ours will coincide, but surely you can't blame them for not wanting to be subservient to our interests as a general rule. Goodness!
