Did you see the windmill article I posted? 25% of the electrical power needs for the US ( based upon a conservative 30% effective utilization rate ) could have been bought by the $87 B we spent on Iraq. That's not R&D but based upon a proven, on the mountaintop deployment in Oregon. $87 Billion is a whole lot of money to find solutions. We aren't even looking.

There is Helium-3 on the Moon and we have the technology now to fuse it. The only reason we aren't doing it now is because He-3 is incredibly rare here, but common on the moon. We'd better start some long-term planning soon for alternatives - my first undergraduate degree was in geology. Oil production peaked and China is now #2 importer. I don't know of anyone who waits till their kid is 18 to start planning their college fund.
