It appears you are interpreting "buffer" as a specialized term. I didn't have minefields in mind. I meant "buffer" solely as turf between us and the bad guys. Europe served that purpose. Europe was the low hanging fruit that the Soviets would have taken if they could before getting around to us. Unless, of course, they lobbed nukes over the top. Sorry my imagery didn't resonate with you.
