Would it make you more comfortable if I amended my statement from "Europe" to "Western Europe"? That's what I meant by "Europe." Eastern Europe was under the Soviet umbrella during most of the period we're talking about. In fact, Russia is part of Europe. So when I said "Europe" in contrast with the Soviet Union, I meant the part of Europe that was not part of the Soviet umbrella. I will gladly stipulate that if it will keep the discussion from running amok.

I recommend you read any historical book on Russian/Soviet Foreign Policy and another on European Geography and its influence on Politics.

No thanks. This colloquy was started by Derek's assertion that US interests were a viable proxy for Europe's interests. While your suggested reading might be fascinating, I don't think it's consumption is essential to the question on the table. <g>

Sovereign countries like to at least maintain the illusion that their leaders work for them and that they get to decide what's in their own best interests. It's not always pretty, but that is what sovereignty is about.
