Jan 25, 8:53 PM EST Syria Denies Weapons Received Before War DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) -- Syria on Sunday denied claims that it received weapons of mass destruction from Iraq shortly before the United States and its allies invaded. An article in London's Sunday Telegraph quoted David Kay, the outgoing leader of a U.S. weapons search team in Iraq, as saying that part of Iraq's secret weapons program had been hidden in Syria. But in an interview aired later Sunday on National Public Radio, Kay said it is difficult to determine whether shipments to Syria included weapons, in part because Syria has refused to cooperate in this part of the weapons investigation. In brief comments to reporters, Syrian Information Minister Ahmad Hassan called the Telegraph report "baseless and misleading." The Syrian government has repeatedly denied that Iraqi weapons of mass destruction were sent to Syria to prevent their discovery by U.N. inspectors or U.S. troops.
