You're still looking at it backwards. What do we need France as a buffer against? The Atlantic Ocean? Russia took Eastern Europe for its empire and as their buffer while we maintained Western Europe in our sphere of influence, and put Western Europe under our nuclear umbrella. Facing down the Russians in the Fulda Gap was not a benefit for us. But not having Soviet domination over all of Europe was.
