They complain that the removal of the huge quantities of small fish by industrial trawlers is helping to denude their fishing grounds of other species, including salmon, that depend on the feed fish."

I think maybe the lesson is that it is arrogant to believe we can take an ecosystem as complicated as the world's oceans, and that we still know very little about, and bend it to our will.

With respect to many species, we still haven't the foggiest notion of where and how they breed and their life cycle. Take a popular game species like the tarpon. Do we know where they breed? Do we know where they go when they aren't feeding inshore? Heck no.

The most eco-friendly way to harvest fish is the oldest, with a sharp, pointed stick (spearfishing). It is also the funnest. You only kill what you intend to eat, no bycatch problem (though it is pretty unsporting if you use scuba gear).

After that you have shallow water or pelagic hook and line fishing (deep water hook and line isn't as good as most of the undersized fish are in no shape to be released due to decompression on the way up/swim bladder).

Everything else pretty much sucks.
