would be just like a theologian to think that they didn't survive ...his innate desire for the survival of his profession does lean to this bent of thought.
;-)
but i see epicureans , stoics , sophists, freemasons , pythagorans everywhere about !
Hard to say they didn't survive , and in actuality it was because of the many former philosopher's reasoning and rationality gave truer body and sensibilty and clarity of shape to what that "theology" , which was already dawning everywhere in us from those terrfically cruel times of tyranny and fear . Most men do desire peace , whether there is one God or twenty. And actually the pagans as we know were actually quite tolerant to a large degree. It is an amalgamate really , and an ongoing experiment with ideas , from Buddha to Christ.
There seems to be quite a bit of Pantheism running about the planet these days , and seems quite ready to dwell in our imaginations from now on . As reality is that which the perciever percieves . And men have been trying to percieve utopias for a long time , both in themselves and with the world about. Heaven is a nice imaginary escape route , especially it must have seemed given those hopeless times. Heaven is here everywhere about , or it does not exist? For men do not see it ?
(There are no atheist in fox holes , but you also found quite a few stoics in war too...I guess something did survive?)
some people see angels running about , some hear of them , and some don't see any at all... but beauty exists all the same . |
