Amy,
re: The rich kids tour China, while the poor kids work in Iraq.
Good point.
It's interesting that if you go back to the Vietnam days, the war hawks were the ones in favor of the draft, the war doves against it. Frankly, in Vietnam, they wouldn't have had enough folks to fight the war without the draft; most people were sensible enough not to volunteer.
Because I suggested the draft would be a good idea, and I'm against the war, the hawks on this thread jumped head first to the other side. Funny.
My guess is that the military is going to find itself in the same situation as they were in Vietnam, that assuming that Bush can't pull back significant numbers from Iraq and Afghanistan. Recruiters are having a hard time getting folks for the National Guard, now that's it's not a few weekends a year, but a year in Iraq. I've read that most of the folks in Iraq, when asked about the bonus, are laughing, saying "no way". And I haven't seen any numbers, but my guess is that recruitment for the "volunteer army" is way down.
So my guess, assuming Bush gets elected and assuming he can't extricate himself from Iraq, is a draft starting in 2005. I'm looking forward to the hawks changing their position on the draft once their hero makes the change <especially if they are over draft age>.
