I agree, but there are two important functions the vp provides, imo:

(1) help deliver a few states; and
(2) help shore up the presidential candidate's weak points.

For example, Gore was seen as too liberal, so he chose a more conservative vice president. Bush was seen as lacking "gravitas," so he chose a vice president that has gravitas to spare.

Kerry is reportly considered aloof, and was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Edwards is very good at connecting with the "common folk" and was born lower middle class, so he is a good contrast to Kerry.
