All of these share great similarities as far as the general population being swept away with hysterical paranoia by a fear of "the other" -- whether it be in the form of a group of people, or a disease that seems to be coming from somewhere else.


And in all those cases, there weren't actual events or deaths to "inspire" the hysteria. In the present case, planes crashing into New York City and the Pentagon, and thousands of lives lost, may make hysteria seem a bit more justified.
