I've seen a couple of these posts on the health care subject. Here's a happened today anecdotal thing about dentists.

I had a filling break in '95, old dentist had just retired so I went to a new one. I needed this and this and this ...

Then I supposidly needed all my gums sliced because of gum disease. Nope, not me I told them. We're going to make you sign a paper and sent me to a specialist who wouldn't file an insurance claim unless I pony'd up $5k to have it done. Screw him and his horse. That cost me $108. All my teeth were going to drop out within a year. Dentist kept really putting the pressure on about getting it done.

Now 9 years later I go to a new and well respected dentist. Still have the teeth I should have lost 8 years ago and no gum disease. Second opinions are worth it.
