Peter, we're a democracy. We the people decide what economic system to use.

We've chosen capitalism, a dynamic strong growth efficient system which, however, leads to a pretty big gap between the top and the bottom.

Why should the bottom suffer because we've chosen an economic system that doesn't value the work they do very highly? Don't they also work for the good of the country, don't they deserve to share in the bounty of a wealthy nation with a strong economy?

Don't we the people have a right to compensate the bottom with redistributed wealth to promote the general welfare and insure domestic tranquility?

I'm sure you realize that if the bottom gets too dissatisfied with our economic system they'll elect leaders who will choose a more socialist one. So it's in the best interest of everyone, including the top, that everyone feels the system works well for them.
