The vermont senator (forgot his name, the really outspoken guy who argued with Greenspan that day)... is for a workers rights program as a component of any further free trade. He said the Vermont middle class has been devastated by Nafta, so he went down to Juarez for a visit (that is where some of the Vermont factories have gone). Apparently it was unspeakable poverty. Worse, these maquilladora towns have become havens for violent crime and corruption, as the typically corrupt systems already in place in the third world seek to control this new flow of money. He says the free trade experiment that was Nafta is a failure, and we need to reform it or forget it. Also the other Latin American countries are less interested in free trade than they were, now that they have seen the actual result. As a side note, Juarez has been documented as the location where up to 300 young girls have just "disappeared". No bodies or anything, nobody knows what is going on. There was a frontline documentary about this. These maquilladora towns allow this to happen. The mexican people are better off without the lure of crime inspired money.
