Two-thirds of Democrats across the country disapprove of how Bush is handling the presidency, compared with just 51% who felt that way about President Nixon in 1972.

The Democrats' antipathy toward Bush is rooted in the disputed 2000 election, doubts about Bush's justification for the war in Iraq and his decision to govern as though he had a conservative mandate even though he lost the popular vote.

"I have been a Democrat all my life, and I have never seen it like this," says Bill Shaheen, co-chairman of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's campaign. "The Democrats are united on a single cause: They want Bush out of office."

Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center, says there is a lot of evidence that electability is an important factor in this year's Democratic nomination contests. "Democrats are much more politically opposed to President Bush than they've ever been to previous incumbent Republicans, and by a lot," he says.
